Valery Evlanov Interview to SJ-Club
SJ-Club
- Congratulations on your great debut Valery! "On the Other Side" album is surprisingly good! It's so well done! How long did it take you to produce it? When did you decide to do an album?

Valery Evlanov
- Thank you! I made some notes for less than a week. First I wanted to do a single but then I composed about seven melodies and then I realized that I had enough material for the album. The whole process took me for about a half of a year from the very beginning to the mixing and mastering.

SJ-Club
- What is your inspiration?

Valery Evlanov
- I get my inspiration from nature. I like to walk and to think about everything from the origin of the Universe to the plans for my dinner. My daughter was born last year so my nature walks are not lonely anymore and I have to do it on a daily basis. I sang melodies to my recorder and then repeat them on my guitar or piano in the evenings.
SJ-Club
- When did you decide to play a guitar and what else music instrument do you play?

Valery Evlanov
- I graduated piano class. I was interested in guitar during my teenage years. I had my music education already so I started to learn myself. Later I got the electric guitar. Then I enrolled guitar class at Ordynka variety jazz college where I mastered related instrument - classic guitar. I had to play a piano during my electric guitar class at Russian Gnessin Academy of music. Also I play bass guitar and percussions.
SJ-Club
- Tell us about your current instruments?

Valery Evlanov
- I have three guitars now. The main instrument is Sadowsky custom NYC S-Style guitar which I bought from Roger Sadowsky in New York. The rest are Almansa Spanish classic guitar and Santana electric acoustic guitar. I plan to order another one guitar from Roger Sadowsky.
SJ-Club
- And what kind of guitar is it?

Valery Evlanov
- I haven't decided yet whether I make a special order or buy a standard model. I'm considering LS-17 or LS-15. These are hollow-body guitars with distinguished jazz sound.

SJ-Club
- Valery where you recorded the album and who did help you?

Valery Evlanov
- I recorded the album in Russia. All tracks were recorded at the Evlanov home studio with enthusiastic support from my one year aged daughter. If she enjoyed the draft, I continued with the piece or else I had to consider different arrangement or play a new theme. I worked in recording studio for a long time so I managed to do mixing and mastering with myself.

SJ-Club
- Your daughter has a good taste of music!

Valery Evlanov
- Thank you! I dedicated her the composition called "Girl from Indiana" for her help.

SJ-Club
- Who are your favorite guitarists who inspired you?

Valery Evlanov
- I have a lot of different guitar players in different styles who influenced my style and performance. Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Chuck Loeb, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, George Benson, Pat Martino, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson etc. I know Lee Ritenour personally. I met him at his show in Indianapolis last autumn.
SJ-Club
- Which projects did you participate in beside your solo career?

Valery Evlanov
- I often play with symphonic orchestras such as "Globalis", Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, Pavel Kogan's Moscow Symphony Orchestra for different projects such as "Gladiator. LIVE IN CONCERT", "New Star", "LA LA LAND IN CONCERT", "THE ARTIST IN CONCRT". I perform together with my wife singer Nadezhda Evlanova as a duo (Russia, Germany) and also I played with Ivan Dyma Quintette called "Jazz Avangard".

SJ-Club
- Do you have any favorite motion picture soundtrack?

Valery Evlanov
- I think it's "La La Land" choosing from which I used to play. It has swing, bebop and jazz ballad themes. It's very interesting to play this music together with eighty musicians. The highest number of more than one hundred musicians performed the "Gladiator".
SJ-Club
- If you hear your music in supermarket or elevator because smooth jazz is often played there what will you feel?

Valery Evlanov
- I'll have to stop and concentrate on my music to understand how does it sound in the different from the studio environment.

SJ-Club
- Do you plan new release?

Valery Evlanov
- Yes, after a little break I'm going to work on a new album. But now I need a rest to get new ideas.

SJ-Club
- What about live performance of your "On the other Side" album for your fans?

Valery Evlanov
- I consider the show for my Russian fans this autumn.

SJ-Club
